Behind the Birmingham scandal

Article Abstract:

Controversy has arisen in the Sparkhill district of Birmingham over revelations that councillors seeking to be elected the next MP for the district apparently obtained housing improvement grants for party members in return for support when a candidate was selected. These events are only part of wider political difficulties in the district, and need to be handled very carefully by the Labour party. Birmingham council has set up an independent inquiry, but the Labour party has responded only by suspending four local parties.

Entertaining the great and the good doesn't prove a thing

Article Abstract:

The guest list for 'The Lunch of the Century' at the Mansion House in London, England, omits people who would be regarded by many observers as having made a significant contribution to society. This highlights the fact that there is no objective way of measuring achievement. The most remarkable aspect of this list, at least in the categories of great achievement it highlights, is that it is very similar to a list that might have been put together 50 or 100 years ago.

Is this the only Labour leader to dislike the very party he leads?

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair dislikes both the Labour party and the Labour movement as a whole, especially the trade unions. He is easily convinced that local councillors are involved in corrupt activities, and there have been many expulsions from the Labour party. It is clear that he wishes to go in a different direction from the Labour party, and that he is attempting to remove power from the party to use for his own purposes.
