Taking credit for fighting smog

Article Abstract:

In Los Angeles, CA, the independent regulatory body South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is pioneering environmental regulators to establish a large scale trading market in pollution rights. The scheme, Regional Clean Air Incentives Market (Reclaim,) involves an annual target for reducing the main smog components. The main industrial polluters will be given a quota for pollution which they can legally emit. These credits will reduce each year by 5-8.5%. Companies will have to cut emission or buy extra credits from other companies.

To ski or not to ski: that is the question

Article Abstract:

Colorado passed an amendment to the state constitution abolishing all laws banning discrimination against homosexuals and prohibiting any future anti-discriminatory laws. Hollywood stars who usually ski in Aspen, Colorado are boycotting the resort. The amendment was put forward by the religious fundamentalist right with support from the military centre at Colorado Springs. Loss of business may cause a repeal. Denver, Boulder, Aspen and other cities are contesting the amendment.

Many observers claim that the annual Academy Awards show the film industry as self-indulgent and excessive. However, the awards still attract a great deal of public attention, and many wealthy people are expected to visit Los Angeles for the 1995 ceremony. Those attending will be dressed very glamorously, and there will be a number of parties both before and after the ceremony.
