Tales of ordinary madness

Article Abstract:

Director Mark Rylance believes that Shakespeare had a very deep understanding of mental disorder. He points to elements in Shakespeare plays which deal with conditions including obsession with word-play and metaphor and the twisting of meaning. He has worked with a group of actors at Broadmoor Special Hospital, and has found the results to be very powerful. One of the most meaningful experiences associated with this work has been allowing patients to participate in the graveyard scene in 'Hamlet.'

'Blunders' allowed schizophrenic to kill

Article Abstract:

The murder in Jul 1994 by paranoid schizophrenic Stephen Laudat of Bryan Bennett, a fellow patient at the Worland Day Centre in Newham, UK, has cast a further shadow over the care in the community policy. A report into the case has indicated that the ferocity of the attack could not have been anticipated, and Bennett's death could therefore not have been prevented. However, it has criticised the way in which Laudat's return to the community was handled.

'Schizophrenia is nothing to be afraid of.' (schizophrenic Janey Antoniou)(Interview)

Article Abstract:

Many of the 250,000 schizophrenics in the UK are trying to lead ordinary lives, and are far removed from the violent offenders who have received extensive media attention, according to Janey Antoniou, herself a schizophrenic. Many find it hard to accept that they are ill, but also welcome spells in hospital as a time of relief. They are aware that they do not act like other people, but cannot control what is happening to them.
