Tango'd

Article Abstract:

Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla made tango an extremely sophisticated and emotional form of music, according to Latvian classical violinist Gidon Kremer. He is shortly to perform a programme of Piazzolla's work in London, England, with his Astor Quartet. He feels just as comfortable with Piazzolla's work as with that of the great classical composers of the past, and believes that Piazzolla deserves great respect. He is particularly attracted by the sincerity and energy of Piazzolla's music.

'We can't make it easy enough.'

Article Abstract:

It is important to combine contemporary and classical music in concert programming, according to pianist Joanna MacGregor. Her most recent tour combines the Tudor composers John Dowland and William Byrd with contemporary music by Thomas Ades, Harrison Birtwistle and John Cage. She is using multi-tracking to achieve the complex configurations sought by Conlon Nancarrow, but is aware of the dangers of using technology merely as a gimmick.
