Suharto finds the old magic losing its power

Article Abstract:

Many inhabitants of Java, the most politically dominant of the Indonesian islands, where great faith is placed in mystics, believe that President Suharto may not remain in power much longer. They point particularly to natural disasters such as drought and forest fires as an indication that Suharto is losing his legitimacy. Suharto himself frequently consults mystics, and is extremely interested in the wayang kulit, a shadow puppet theatre with allegorical tales.

Suharto's offer of reform falls on deaf ears

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's President Suharto has gone some way towards meeting demands for reform, but his opponents have rejected his offer of elections later in 1998. He has stood firm against calls for his immediate resignation. Students continue to protest, and large demonstrations by ordinary residents of Jakarta, Indonesia, are also anticipated. Many foreigners and ethnic Chinese are now seeking to leave the country.
