That special relationship - between Europe and the US

Article Abstract:

The main significance of the visit to the US by UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook is that it allows the UK to portray itself as the main link between Europe and the US. This is particularly the case because the UK currently holds the presidency of the European Union. Indeed, this presidency could signify a new development in the relationship between the European Union and the US. It is becoming increasingly widely recognized in the US that relations with Europe are of considerable importance, especially in the light of the financial crisis in Asia. Furthermore, the US must be aware of the likely impact on the European Union of the Euro.

Just remember what happened last time we were in charge

Article Abstract:

The UK is to take over the Presidency of the European Union on Jan 1, 1998, for six months. The atmosphere surrounding this event seems very different from the atmosphere that prevailed when the UK last held this position, in the second half of 1992. However, there are a number of important parallels. There are serious differences of opinion between the UK and the European Union now, as there were in 1992, and it is still proving hard to convince ordinary Britons of the merits of the European Union. However, this government is regarded more positively in Europe than the 1992 administration was.

The man who went his own way

Article Abstract:

German Chancellor Helmut Kohl is keen to present himself to voters in the run-up to elections in Oct 1998 as a strong defender of national interests. This stance will probably reap benefits, given that Germans have become much less idealistic about European integration. Kohl will also seek to portray Social Democrat leader Gerhard Schroder as being too willing to give in to the whims of the UK and France. It seems likely that the election will result in Schroder becoming Chancellor, but with Kohl's Christian Democrats holding a certain degree of power.
