The Bank's gain is our loss

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the decision of Howard Davies to leave the CBI and accept the position of deputy governor of the Bank of England is yet another case of the world of high finance taking away industry's most able leaders. He has had a strong influence on a number of institutions with rather traditional views, and has had extensive experience in business. He could still play a key role within the Bank of England as a representative of more radical views.

A technocrat joins battle for greater independence

Article Abstract:

Howard Davies was an extremely successful director-general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), but has now moved away from the world of business by becoming deputy governor of the Bank of England. However, business is likely to benefit from having someone at the Bank of England who will represent its views. He has considerable political influence too, and will play a key role in determining industrial finance policy.

Learning to live in the policy spotlight

Article Abstract:

The Bank of England has traditionally kept a low profile, but has received considerable attention recently. It has clashed with chancellor Kenneth Clarke over interest rate policy, and its role under a possible Labour government is likely to be discussed soon. It must now accept that it is attracting greater publicity, with particular scrutiny of its role in bringing down inflation.
