The Briton bringing hope to Death Row

Article Abstract:

There can be no justification for a civilized society like the US using the death penalty, according to trainee solicitor Owen Williams. His strong belief in the sanctity of human life stems from the fact that his father committed suicide when he was 17. He is shortly to begin a three-month assignment working with George Kendall, who works for the Legal Defense Fund of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He will mainly be working on federal appeals, putting forward the view that particular cases violate constitutional law.

Shear style in Somerset

Article Abstract:

The wool of Wensleydale sheep is extremely soft, and is similar in quality to mohair. It has attracted the attention of fashion designer Katharine Hamnett, who obtains the wool from sheep bred by Sally Holton. Her farm uses no synthetic chemicals or antibiotics, and shuns conventional medicine in favour of homeopathy. The wool is dyed with dyes made from plants which grow locally and are gathered by hand. The dyes are made according to 17th century recipes.

Feeding the Cockney soul

Article Abstract:

Eels, pie and mash were once the staple diet of workers in the East End of London, but now there are few restaurants in the area offering these dishes. There were more than 200 such restaurants in the late 1940s, when eels, pie and mash were at their most popular. These dishes were affordable nutrition for the area's poorest families.
