The French connection

Article Abstract:

Music offers a common language that crosses the boundaries of period, style and nationality, according to composer Yan Pascal Tortelier. He regards an orchestra as potential waiting to happen, and feels greatly inspired when he is able to get an orchestra to follow where he leads. In contrast, he finds it very difficult when he encounters resistance from an orchestra. He believes that he needs to gradually assimilate a piece of music before he can begin to conduct it.

'Beethoven was always too much. He's not slightly anything, he's very everything ... It takes its toll. Preparing this music, conducting it, playing it, you feel yourself stretched on some kind of psychological rack.' (conductor Sir Simon Rattle prepares to complete his first Beethoven symphony cycle)(Interview)

Article Abstract:

Undertaking a complete cycle of the Beethoven Symphonies is one of the most demanding projects a conductor can become involved in, according to Sir Simon Rattle. The conductor must be prepared to become exposed to much criticism, as these works show a conductor's weak points as no others do. It is music of great extremes, and leaves the conductor nowhere to hide.
