'The Proms? Do me a favour!' (composer Steve Martland)(Interview)

Article Abstract:

There are many aspects of the classical music establishment which should be changed, according to composer and conductor Steve Martland. He has become known for his outspoken views, and makes no apology for his unconventional approach. However, there is a caring, spiritual side to his personality. He makes great efforts to encourage music students, for example, and runs his own, non fee-paying summer school. He first gained public attention in the 1980s, when he was the first real composer to take rock music seriously.

Composing through a Glass darkly

Article Abstract:

Composing for film is not an easy task, according to composer Philip Glass. However, he enjoyed working on the music for Sean Mathias's film 'Bent' and Martin Scorses's film 'Kundun.' He was particularly pleased to be able to write a song for Mick Jagger, who appears as a drag artist in 'Bent.' He feels that he learnt a great deal about film from working with Martin Scorsese. His latest project is 'Monsters of Grace,' a collaboration with theatre director Robert Wilson.

A reputation for repetition

Article Abstract:

Composer Philip Glass indicates that his work no longer contains much repetition. However, he also finds pleasure in returning to some of the concepts about structure which he found important in the 1970s.
