Why I'm challenging my party to let me stand for mayor

Article Abstract:

The UK government is doing the right thing in allowing London, England, to be governed by a democratically elected mayor. However, some elements in the Labour party seem to be determined to damage this process by becoming involved in a meaningless conflict about who should be the party's candidate for mayor. It is now time to allow London Labour party members to select who they wish as their candidate. It is vital that the Labour party selects from among the strongest candidates, as the votes of Londoners cannot be taken for granted.

Labour must free Britain's cities to use their own imagination

Article Abstract:

The UK government's proposals for regional government in England and the introduction of executive mayors for leading local councils will have a very significant impact. The new local and regional structures will quickly prompt innovation and change. Strengthening regional and city identities will encourage competition between areas for resources, however, and the Labour party will have to address this problem. It is seems very likely that the power of central government will decline significantly in the medium term.
