The decline and fall of the watercolour

Article Abstract:

C21, the new open painting competition created by the Royal Watercolour Society, is designed to encourage artists, particularly younger ones, to develop watercolour as a dynamic medium for the next century. Watercolour was seen in the 18th and 19th centuries as merely a rapid way of recording passing scenes. However, the work of Cezanne and Paul Klee in watercolour shows that the medium can be fluid, strong and subtle in comparison with oils and acrylics. Furthermore, it can convey the qualities of light.

Still life with ambiguities

Article Abstract:

The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian art in Islington, London, England, is showing 19 paintings by Giorgio Morandi until Sep 19, 1999. These paintings are on loan from the Giovanardi Collection of Milan. They include a painting of bottles in the early Cubist style of Braque and Picasso and a 1956 still life. In almost all cases, the paint has been very crudely applied. Indeed, Morandi's brush strokes seem to have come from several different directions at the same time.
