The Scotsman's home rule hand-grenade

Article Abstract:

The Scotsman newspaper has attracted considerable controversy by shifting away from its left-wing attitude on Scottish home rule with the statement that Scottish home rule would only be successful if Scottish MPs were to give up the right to vote on English affairs at Westminster. This issue has been a stumbling block within the home rule question for many years, and has the potential to be used effectively on both sides of the argument. The newspaper has taken a useful step forwards by highlight the importance of Scottish home rule being linked with voting reform.

Pageantry fit for a new polity

Article Abstract:

The recent release by the Scottish Constitutional Convention of its final proposals for the structure of a Scottish parliament has not in itself attracted great attention, as the organisation's views have already become well known. However, it is worth noting that the proposals were presented with considerable imagery and rhetoric. This indicates that nationalism in Scotland now goes far beyond the Scottish National Party. It is clear that the United Kingdom must now adapt to the fact that Scotland is taking on a distinct political culture of its own.

Across those far blue hills a bell is tolling

Article Abstract:

The Conservative party must now think very carefully about its future following an extremely poor performance in elections in Scotland. It must decide whether it really wants to try to maintain a presence in Scotland, and must take a clear line on whether Scottish Conservatives are really part of the Conservative movement as a whole. Against this background, there will be increasingly fierce political debate in the run-up to national elections.
