Prime Minister changes his economic line

Article Abstract:

British Prime Minister John Major said on Oct 20, 1992 that Britain would have a strategy for growth, but this was a change from the economic plans given during the April 1992 election campaign. In a television interview on Oct 20 1992 he did not refer to inflation, which had been his main reason for all previous economic strategies. Previous interviews are quoted in which Mr Major explained his views against devaluation. He believed it would lead to higher inflation.

A Budget for the people

Article Abstract:

UK Chancellor Gordon Brown's first Budget has focused on employment, investment, stability and opportunity. It includes a 5.2 billion pounds sterling windfall tax to produce finance for a welfare-to-work programme for the long-term unemployed, as well as a reduction of 2% in the main rate of Corporation Tax. Financial markets reacted to the Budget with a certain degree of disappointment, as taxes on consumers were not increased by as much as had been anticipated.

Dropping the Pound? Blair, Brown clash on the biggest issue of all

Article Abstract:

There are indications that UK Chancellor Gordon Brown could be going too far in his efforts to force Prime Minister Tony Blair to make an early decision about membership of the European single currency. He could be failing to appreciate Blair's determination to ensure that the mistakes of previous governments are not repeated. The Prime Minister's office has denied reports that Blair will shortly announce early membership of the European single currency.
