The architectural legacy of Stephen Lawrence

Article Abstract:

The annual silver award for architecture of the Goldschmied Trust has been renamed the Stephen Lawrence award in memory of Lawrence, who was murdered in a racial attack in 1993. He had wanted to become an architect and had undertaken work experience with young architect Arthur Timothy. Marco Goldschmied, who has made the 5,000 pounds sterling available for the award, aims to re-establish a public understanding of what architecture can do. The shortlist for another architectural award, the 20,000 pounds sterling Stirling prize, contains 11 buildings.

Foster and his flying machine

Article Abstract:

The Stirling Prize for architecture has been won by Sir Norman Foster for his design for the 8.2 million pounds sterling American Air Museum at Duxford, England. This is widely acknowledged to be the best building constructed in the UK in 1997, and has already attracted more than 450,000 visitors. The judges were attracted to it because of its drama and beauty. The design reflects the fact that Foster himself is extremely interested in flying.

There was considerable conflict between the judges for the inaugural Jane Drew Prize, which recognizes collaboration, diversity and innovation in architecture. It was finally decided that the 10,000 pounds sterling prize should go to Kathryn Gustafson, but the judges have issued a statement expressing their dissatisfaction with the selection process. One of the judges, Doris Saatchi, feels that there were insufficient nominations.
