The quality of university education in the UK will be diminished if the government decides to adopt the recommendations for approaches to university teaching contained in the Dearing Report 'Higher Education in the Learning Society.' This report presents an approach which seeks to make university teaching into a technical skill which it is possible to quantify and assess. It emphasizes bureaucratic formulaic teaching at the expense of subject-based knowledge, and ignores the close association between research and teaching.

Many UK schools have moved away from traditional prize-giving days over recent years, recognizing that such ceremonies are only really worthwhile for those who obtain prizes. It is more common for schools to focus on celebrating their achievements as a whole, and they often use such events as a way of establishing closer links with the local community. If prizes are awarded, they tend to cover achievements other than the purely academic, such as sporting ability and personal qualities.
