The day Ulster lost heart

Article Abstract:

Northern Irish First Minister designate David Trimble has declined to nominate Ulster Unionists to a new cross-community executive. A 10-member all-nationalist executive was nominated by Sinn Fein and the Social Democratic and Labour Party, but this was immediately dissolved. Further controversy arose with the resignation of the Social Democratic and Labour Party's Seamus Mallon, who had been designated as Trimble's deputy. The Good Friday Agreement is now to be put on hold while its implementation is reviewed.

Ulster finds a new home for old foes

Article Abstract:

There were signs of attempts at reconciliation being made at the first meeting of the new Northern Ireland assembly in the old Stormont parliament building in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble emphasized that he would welcome those who really wish to move away from terrorism and towards democracy. However, Rev Ian Paisley denounced Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams and a Sinn Fein member indicated that some Unionists could have their own paramilitary associations.

Streets full of dignity, despair and raw wounds

Article Abstract:

It is clear that the residents of Omagh, Northern Ireland, where a bomb attack killed 29 people and injured at least 200 in Aug 1998, are still in shock. Some 500 people have received counselling following this tragedy, and some still suffer flashbacks and panic attacks. However, local people have also found the strength to hold together, and a ceremony is to take place on Aug 15, 1999, to commemorate those who died.
