The emergence of Turkey as a major world player

Article Abstract:

Turkey is generally regarded very negatively by the international community because of its economic and political problems and its poor human rights record. However, it is possible to argue that Turkey is actually quite strong and influential. This has been seen most recently in the capture of a Kurdish guerrilla leader in Kenya, where he had been protected by the Greeks. This incident has been a significant triumph for Turkey over Greece, its old enemy. Turkey is in an important location geographically, and seems to be involved in some way in almost all significant diplomatic developments.

All aboard for the money primary

Article Abstract:

A number of contenders for the 1996 presidential election have already had to drop out because of the high costs involved in running for the White House. Observers believe that candidates will need $15-25 million in advance to finance almost simultaneous campaigns in the leading states, especially as the time constraints will force them to make extensive use of television, an expensive media. Many candidates will find themselves focusing more on fund-raising than on policies and campaign strategies.

Sex on the Hill: the US scandal that still pays off

Article Abstract:

Political consultants have taken on a very influential position in US society. Their views are widely reported on television and in newspapers, and they are powerful enough to shape the course of politics. Most recently, this has been seen with Dick Morris, who has worked extensively with Bill Clinton. It has been revealed that he established a relationship with a prostitute in Washington and sought to impress her by allowing her to listen to its conversations with Bill Clinton.
