The fourth estate: not guilty

Article Abstract:

The newspapers report on the failure of national institutions in the recession of1992. The Royal Family brought their 'horrible year' of marriage breakdowns upon themselves. The press is just the messenger. It is not responsible for the government's weakness, the House of Commons or the decline of the Church of England. The sexual indiscretions of MPs (Members of Parliament) still cause scandal. A privacy Bill should protect electronic communications in the same way as written communications.

Swimming with lead weights on our boots

Article Abstract:

Problems with Britain joining the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) are that interest rates are decided by European conditions and that the pound sterling is overvalued, constraining British industry. High interest rates have been brought in to control inflation, but this has destabilised everything, leading to prolonged recession. Recovery is slow and it is suggested that the only politically acceptable way to defend sterling is to return to a floating pound outside the ERM.

The clock counts down to China's economic dawn

Article Abstract:

China is performing well economically, and if the growth of GDP continues China could be a wealthy nation in 50 years. Since 1980, China has established itself among the growing industrial Asian nations with a GDP growth which could reach that of the US before 2050. The supply of low cost labour is almost infinite and China will be able to trade competitively with the world especially when it annexes Hong Kong in 1997.
