The future lies with herring Europe

Article Abstract:

The French feel a considerable sentimental attachment to the UK, but if they were forced to choose between a political alliance with the UK or with Germany, they would choose Germany. French politicians despair about the UK's attitude towards the European Union, and their long-term strategy will bring the country much closer to Germany than to the UK. The Conservative party has welcomed the possibility that Edouard Balladur will become president of French, regarding him as a pragmatist, but the Conservatives must realise eventually that he will always put French national interests first.

Playing happy families is not the way to the nation's heart

Article Abstract:

It seems strange that those responsible for the image of UK Chancellor Gordon Brown are keen to portray him as a future family man, even though marriage and having children are actually much less important in UK society than they were in the past. The emphasis on Brown's potential links with family life seems to have been prompted by the fact that through his Budget Brown will be having a significant impact on the incomes of many families. Brown himself seems very uneasy about rumours that he may marry his partner Sarah Macaulay.

Do we want a Europe ruled by blood?

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly clear that the Bosnian Serbs do not take western intervention in the civil war in former Yugoslavia seriously. They make vague promises, but remain fully determined to rid the area of Muslim influence. There are now growing tensions in the UK between those who believe that extensive military involvement is necessary and those who favour withdrawal. There is a danger that a full scale conventional war will develop, going against optimistic statements from European leaders about a new era of security.
