The future should not be hostage to the yuck factor

Article Abstract:

It is natural that people instinctively feel uneasy about human cloning. However, it is important to have principles that are at least partly separate from instincts if human cloning is to be analyzed logically. This seems to be where the Church has not been successful. In debating this subject, the most vociferous churches have emphasized the wrong insights. The weakest aspect of the Christian argument against embryo research and cloning is the claim that a fertilized egg is a human being.

Battle of the Buddhists

Article Abstract:

The Shugden Supporters Community, a sect based in Hebden Bridge, UK, and the Freedom Foundation have condemned the Dalia Lama, who will arrive in the UK on July 15 1996, for banning the worship of Dorje Shugden, a deity and once the ghost of a 17th Century abbot from a monastery. According to Steven Lane, of the Shugden Supporters, worshipping Dorje Shugden is a spiritual practice which is not damaging and can be compared with worshipping the Christian saint, St. Francis.

Time to call the disk doctor

Article Abstract:

The Oxford English Dictionary is available on compact disc in Jun 1992, saving much space, but getting a CD-ROM player to work can be time-consuming. A printed circuit board slots into a PX-compatible computer and a driver must be downloaded. The dictionary enables searching the English language for words, meanings, phrases and etymologies. Colour and fonts clarify entries' composition. Size can be adjusted to suit. Retrieval is quick and intelligent.
