The geography of failure

Article Abstract:

It is widely recognized that there is a significant gap in economic performance between the North and the South in the UK, with the economy of the South being much stronger than that of the North. Furthermore, there are strong divergences in economic performance between cities and regions that are quite close together. There are many complex reasons why some places enjoy economic prosperity and others do not, and it is therefore very difficult to tackle this problem. However, it is clear that factors such as communications, cultural attractions and educational facilities all play a role.

Let's all make lots of money

Article Abstract:

The market system must move towards distributing the wealth being generated by market capitalism in the first part of the 21st century if it is to accumulate the political support required to match its economic success. Internet share-trading will play a role in allowing ordinary people to acquire a stake in this wealth. It is also worth considering other approaches, including creating individual retirement accounts, permitting people to place money tax-free into share portfolios which they could select themselves, and forming shadow share-ownership schemes for public sector employees.
