The real cost of cheapness

Article Abstract:

UK supermarket chain Asda is calling for the abolition of resale price maintenance, which allows pharmaceuticals suppliers to determine minimum prices that retailers must charge. It is indeed wrong that some pharmaceuticals should be sold at greatly inflated prices compared with the cost of producing them. However, selling pharmaceuticals cheaply in supermarkets is not necessarily a positive development. It may be acceptable for supermarkets to sell their own-brand over-the-counter medicines at low prices, but all other medicines should be available only in pharmacies, where customers can benefit from the advice of the pharmacist.

The dangers of provocation

Article Abstract:

The prediction by French philosopher Michel Foucault that sex would come to dominate social discourse seems to have come true. Sex now obsesses people, but does not liberate them. The great expansion in pornography can be regarded as symptomatic of Foucault's prediction about sexual obsession, and is not at all gender-specific. Both men and women are confused about the role of sex in their lives, and this is having particularly negative consequences for children.
