Literature and African-American church music are not necessarily opposing interests, according to Anthony Heilbut, author and gospel music expert. He wrote the first really comprehensive history of gospel music, and is working on a 25th anniversary edition. He has also attracted attention as the biographer of Thomas Mann, whom he credits as having great sensitivity, contrasting with the traditional image of Mann as being cold and dry.

A new television programme about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has revived discussion about his abilities and his influence. He was hailed as a 'genius' from an early stage, and certainly had great melodic gifts. However, he had difficulties in relating to other people, and by the mid-1970s had become a mere shadow of his former self. He used drugs to escape reality, and failed to complete musical projects.

He has been strongly associated with a very relaxed sound, and has made considerable efforts in more recent years to shed this image. His latest album, 'Death in the Wilderness,' presents a very different style from that for which he is best known.
