The gospel on social justice - but who's listening?

Article Abstract:

Recent comments from bishops in the UK on issues including Third World debt have highlighted the problems associated with distinguishing between broad moral principles and detailed economic policies. Politicians today seem to accept the right of religious leaders to express views on politics, but it is unclear whether religious leaders can offer a distinctive opinion. There are some abstract principles which can be taken from the Bible, but it is hard to translate these into practical economics. It may be a long time before ordinary people accept that social cohesion is preferable to economic success.

The calling

Article Abstract:

There has been a rise in the number of people seeking to enter the priesthood across all denominations in the UK. Some observers believe that this trend is connected with economic prosperity, which makes people feel that material wealth is inadequate and that they need a deeper dimension to their life. People are also influenced by the social climate, with the 1990s being a questioning decade. Many of those who feel called to the priesthood have had a dramatic experience of God telling them that this is what they should do.

Where heaven and earth collide

Article Abstract:

The complicated journey to the Hebridean island of Iona gives the visitor the strong impression that this is a very unusual destination. The island, which is regarded as one of the most sacred places in the British Isles, has a population of only 92, but attracts many visitors, especially to the Iona Community, founded in 1938. It is hard to establish why so many people are turning to Iona for spiritual support at a time when mainstream churches are seeing falling congregations.
