The heavy load of history

Article Abstract:

Japan's Emperor Akihito is facing challenges very similar to those being faced by the royal family in the UK. In both countries, there is growing uncertainty about what the exact role of the monarchy should be, and it has become necessary to consider how the monarchy can be accessible enough to be relevant. His workload is much lighter than that of the Queen, but he is much more modern in his outlook than his predecessors. Some of his actions, including touching an elderly man, are completely unprecedented in the Japanese imperial family.

Wanted: a brand new caste

Article Abstract:

The UK is rapidly developing into a multicultural society, but there are still very few opportunities for black actors and actresses. They tend to fall victim to stereotypical casting, and often make only very slow career progress. Some observers believe that this problem is a reflection of insufficient funding for the arts, which forces producers and directors to avoid taking risks. Some black actors and actresses have responded by setting up their own production company, while others have gone to the US.

More McDonald's than Mitsubishi

Article Abstract:

Students at Japanese schools in the UK are under very strong pressure to perform well academically, as are their contemporaries in Japan. However, it is particularly hard for them to focus on their studies when they are surrounded by a more relaxed culture than that found in Japan. Changes are taking place in Japanese society, but there is still much more conformity in Japan than in the UK. Students at Gyosei International School near Milton Keynes, England, have rebelled against the very strict regime.
