The hills are alive...

Article Abstract:

Austrian ski resorts were once very popular with British visitors, but this has not been the case over recent years, even though extensive investment has been made in the country's ski resorts. One of the main reasons for this is that snow is not always guaranteed. Austria is finding it increasingly difficult to compete with North American ski resorts, where there is always snow, and French ski resorts, where snow-making machinery is widely used. Austrian ski resorts are generally more suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers than for experienced skiers.

Up where we belong?

Article Abstract:

Altitude sickness can be a problem for skiers at high-level resorts. This condition takes three forms, two of which, high-altitude pulmonary and cerebral oedema, can endanger life. These usually only affect trekkers and climbers who make progressive ascents on successive days. Most skiers are affected only by mild altitude sickness, which can cause tiredness, nausea and dizziness. Symptoms normally arise after around six hours at altitude. If the sufferer does not ascend further, then symptoms will disappear after a few days.

When the music's never over

Article Abstract:

Austrian ski resorts such as Saalbach-Hinterglemm offer a wide range of attractive slopes. However, they tend to play very loud music at ski-lift stations, which can become intolerable.
