The inscrutable in pursuit of the unspeakable

Article Abstract:

People tend to cope with traumatic or extreme emotional states by viewing themselves in the middle of a story, according to film director Atom Egoyan. This is seen in 'The Sweet Hereafter,' his film which won the Grand Prix du Jury at the Cannes Festival in May 1997. This film has almost none of the video imagery which has always characterized Egoyan's work, and its setting is unusual for a director who focuses on cities and their technologies. However, he found himself very attracted to the film's characters.

The lama behind the drama

Article Abstract:

Khyentse Norbu, a Tibetan Buddhist monk, is aware that his film 'The Cup' will not receive any publicity if he behaves too discreetly. However, he emphasizes that Buddhism is opposed to seeking attention and praise. He believes that there are similarities between Buddhism and football, the subject of his film. He feels that, as a religious leader, he had the qualities required to direct a film efficiently.
