Time for Europe to celebrate spending

Article Abstract:

Consumption is almost static in continental Europe as a whole, and some observers are expressing fears that the key European countries could begin to emulate Japan, where interest rate reductions and fiscal packages have not been successful in stimulating growth. There are high levels of consumer confidence in Europe, but consumers are still not spending very much. This is possibly because consumer spending statistics have become unreliable, or possibly because the move to a near-zero inflation environment has affected buying patterns, delaying purchases.

An alternative agenda for Europe's politicians

Article Abstract:

There a number of key economic issues which European politicians should be considering. These include planning for the changes which will take place as a result of the ageing of Europe's population, ways of creating more new businesses and ways of boosting high-technology businesses in particular. Furthermore, European politicians should consider the implications of changes in the level of self-employment, ways of incorporating the economies of eastern Europe and ways of deriving economic benefit from cultural diversity.
