The long day never closes

Article Abstract:

A typical day in the life of Alistair Meldrum, a criminal lawyer, is described. He believes in the importance of individuals' liberty and legal aid to represent all. His legal aid work is increasing as many solicitors give it up, but bills over 4,000 pounds sterling can take nine - twelve months to be settled without interest. He feels that the disruption to family life and long hours deserve adequate recompense, but standard fees would be impractical for private practitioners to operate and could cause short cuts.

Firm facing up to a Chinese practice

Article Abstract:

Five foreign law firms including Lovell White Durrant have been licensed to practice in Peking in retaliation to US firms practising there illegally. The Chinese legal framework is undeveloped, having oppressed but not protected before the advent of the market economy. Some legal concepts such as intellectual property are new to the Chinese. Lawyers are inexperienced. Chinese culture includes the concept of 'face.' Politeness is very important. Demands are not acceptable.

Planning to avert a tragedy

Article Abstract:

The Health and Safety Club exists to assist businesses in preventing workplace accidents, according to its founder, solicitor Richard Bretton. It gives them information about new regulations, can supply on-the-spot legal advice in emergencies and helps companies establish effective health and safety policies. It was founded in response to the call by the Health and Safety Executive for links between the law enforcers and the business community.
