Why your local is good news

Article Abstract:

England and Wales have 127 local law societies, to which about three-quarters of solicitors belong. Rationalisation of areas would consolidate resources, create a stronger network and be more effective. Local law societies could become more involved in community affairs such as in chambers of commerce. Many services of the Law Society can only be delivered through local societies, such as conferences, continuing education and marketing support. Local autonomy need not be affected as some societies pre-date the national institution, but a coalition would be beneficial.

Good advice is just for starters

Article Abstract:

The Law Society brought in the idea of client care in 1991. London international practice Richards Butler sends clients a client-care document and welcomes them to discussions to work out their own deals, including access to training. Every staff member is responsible for client care, it is part of motivation. Personal feedback from clients can lead to strong, long-term relationships. This increases efficiency. Total quality management can be measured with British Standard 5750.

Mixing partners and principles

Article Abstract:

Multi-disciplinary partnerships (MDPs) were discussed at the Law Society conference. Some solicitors felt they would give solicitors back their traditional position as people of affairs, but others felt conflicts of principle concerning control prevent it. Some accounting firms provide legal and accounting advice packages. This is normal commercial competition. MDPs will emerge to meet market needs and traditional professional divisions will remain.
