The malicious tendency

Article Abstract:

Seven MPs (Members of Parliament) who object to the Treaty on European Union could cause Prime Minister John Major's downfall if they voted against the government, but they intend to remain in office to fight another day. Peter Lilley, Michael Portillo, Michael Forsyth, Eric Forth, John Redwood, Neil Hamilton, Edward Leith and Michael Howard are dissatisfied with ERM withdrawal and with John Major. Lady Thatcher disloyally organised meetings to encourage MPs to vote against the government.

Britain meets its future: Major to step down as Tory leader

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party won the recent general election by a large majority, and new Prime Minister Tony Blair has already made seven Cabinet appointments. Seven Conservative Cabinet ministers lost their seats, and the Conservative party has been dealt a further blow by the decision by party leader John Major to resign. Some observers believe that the Conservative party could take a long time to recover from its defeat, being in the same position as the Labour party was in the early 1980s.

Tory outcry hinges on calls for leadership

Article Abstract:

Conservative backbenchers find supporters criticising the government for their policies and lack of leadership. Some letters to MPs (Members of Parliament) offer resignations and many complain about the pit closures. Some experienced backbenchers compare the situation with the split which arose over Suez, when Anthony Eden resigned. Maastricht is not a main cause of complaint.
