Many politicians and literary figures in the UK have been greatly influenced by a specific book. Former Home Office minister Ann Widdecombe was most influenced by Frank Morrison's 'Who Moved the Stone,' which is an assembly of the proofs of the Resurrection. Peter Wilby, books editor of the New Statesman, was most influenced by R.H. Tawney's 'The Acquisitive Society,' which points out the faults in a society based on capitalist values and greed. Former Labour party leader Michael Foot was greatly influenced by Winwoode Reade's 'The Martyrdom of Man,' which he regards as the best, first history of the world.

Can pay, will pay, but on the right valuation, please

Article Abstract:

The UK government has refused to shift from its policy of basing current council tax bills on valuations made in Apr 1991. This means that many householders are paying more council tax than they really should, as in many cases house prices have fallen in recent years. Local authorities admit that it is not fair that they have to levy charges on the basis of out-of-dat valuations, and the Association of Metropolitan Authorities has requested the government to undertake a revaluation.
