The move upmarket that led to a cabinet minister's fall from grace

Article Abstract:

UK Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson has felt it necessary to resign following revelations that he accepted a 373,000 pounds sterling loan from Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson, who has also resigned, to purchase a home in the fashionable Notting Hill area of London, England. The two men agreed to keep their arrangement secret, but there had already been speculation about how Mandelson obtained the money to purchase such an expensive house. Mandelson hoped initially to be able to retain his post, but recognized that trying to do so would probably inflict even more damage on the government.

Leak revives bitter feud at party's heart

Article Abstract:

The revelation that UK Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson accepted a loan of 373,000 pounds sterling from Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson has served to revive conflict between supporters of Mandelson and those who support Chancellor Gordon Brown. Both sides have suggested that the other was responsible for the leak. Prime Minister Tony Blair had hoped that forcing Brown and Mandelson to work closely together would help to overcome the friction between them caused by Mandelson's decision to support Blair for the leadership of the Labour party in 1994.
