The name's Bond. PFI Bond

Article Abstract:

UK public bodies raising money through the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) are increasingly turning to bonds. It is generally accepted that bonds are important to the PFI, although they are less suitable than bank-brokered loans. Bonds offer attractive terms and price advantages, but do not have the flexibility of bank loans. However, bonds could be a way of attracting pension funds into PFI investment, especially as the government's reduced borrowing requirement is prompting institutions to replace gilts with new bond issues.

When the practitioner becomes the purchaser

Article Abstract:

General practitioners (GPs) feel that all practices should become fundholders to prevent the development of a two-tier system. By Apr 1994 one in three of the population will be registered with a fundholding practice. Advantages are the additional services of counselling and psychotherapy and the use of the private sector, limiting the load on the NHS. Consortia of GPs and health authorities involve GPs in purchasing decisions and amalgamate management facilities.
