The new French revolution

Article Abstract:

France's investigating magistrates are having a significant social impact. Those who have uncovered political corruption have gained a particularly high public profile. Their role is to examine all aspects of the most complex criminal cases before a decision is made on whether to press charges formally. Once they are made responsible for a case, they have substantial powers, and they have humiliated and destroyed the reputations of a number of key public figures. The top investigating magistrates have become as well-known as politicians.

Britain's fishy role in the quota-hopping scandal

Article Abstract:

European Union fisheries ministers have recently agreed on catch quotas for 1997. These quotas are only slightly below those for 1996, even though scientists continue to recommend sharp reductions in catches. There is likely to be continued bitter conflict over fishing quotas, especially as the UK government is blocking agreement on reducing all European Union fishing fleets. It is possible that fisheries policy will become the main area of tension within the European Union in the run-up to the next general election in the UK.

Life, liberty and the purchase of influence

Article Abstract:

Money-raising activities now form a key element of political life in the US. Indeed, it is believed that each senator must raise an average of $15,000 a day during a six-year term in order to have sufficient funds to stand for re-election. In contrast to the UK, it is generally regarded as unethical in the US for individual politicians to amass funds for themselves. However, the campaign-financing system as a whole is dominated by very large sums of money.
