The new problem that is thousands of years old

Article Abstract:

Increasing mobility among labour forces and companies is posing a growing threat to the tax revenues of national governments. Already, companies are carefully selecting where they locate in order to avoid the most onerous tax regimes, and the advent of electronic communications in the form of the Internet means that it may even be possible eventually for companies to place themselves outside the jurisdiction of any national authority. There is now increasing debate about what governments can do to protect their tax revenue and about whether a certain basis of taxation will always remain, even if mobility increases.

It was 30 years ago today

Article Abstract:

The Monkees, a pop group which was extremely successful in the 1960s, has recently been brought together again. The group is now undertaking a UK tour, following the release of a new album, entitled 'Justus,' and a CD compilation of greatest hits. The Monkees was the first manufactured pop group in the world, and some observers treated its members with disdain. However, the group's old songs remain very popular with many of its original fans.

100 years of crowd pleasing

Article Abstract:

Puccini's opera 'La Boheme' was popular almost from its first performance in 1896, and has remained a key element of the repertoire of all major opera houses throughout the 20th century. Some observers feel that its appeal is attributable to its very straightforward plot and the fact that it does not last too long. It certainly fuels popular imagination, and has been a launching pad for a number of subsequently very famous singers.
