The outing of Philip Hensher

Article Abstract:

The unique atmosphere of the House of Commons tends to heighten awareness of sexual issues, according to Philip Hensher, who lost his job as a House of Commons clerk after writing his second novel, 'Kitchen Venom,' which tells the story of a homosexual clerk who becomes a murderer. He mentioned no MPs by name, but set the book in the precise environment in which he had been working. He also attracted controversy because he made remarks about MPs in a gay magazine.

The teaching of poetry at Oxford University, England, will be boosted by a bequest of 5 million pounds sterling from Christopher Tower, a relatively unknown author who died on Sep 21, 1998. The bequest will fund two senior teaching positions at the university's Christchurch college, where Tower studied. One is a Poetry Studentship and the other a junior research fellowship in Greek mythology. There is also some money for an annual Christopher Tower Poetry Prize.
