The pregnant pause

Article Abstract:

Prenatal screening tests for foetal abnormality can cause significant stress for pregnant women and their partners. Some anxiety is an inevitable part of the screening process, but this situation is made worse by the fact that the results of some tests can take a long time to obtain. This problem has been recognized by the charity Antenatal Results and Choices, which runs a 24-hour helpline. Some medical professionals believe that the number of women who have an amniocentesis test could be reduced by linking the results of the 12-week ultrasound scan with the blood tests now undertaken at 15 weeks.

We should recycle the dead to help the living

Article Abstract:

Urgent action must be taken to ease the plight of the many people in the UK who are in need of a donated organ. At present, careful consideration is given to the wishes of the relatives of those who have died, and organs are not removed without their permission. In contrast, no consideration is given to the needs of those requiring a donated organ. It is now time to consider introducing legislation allowing all organs from dead bodies to be automatically available at death without the need for relatives to give permission.
