A 30bn pounds sterling merger to shatter the cosy world of French banking

Article Abstract:

Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP), France's second-largest bank, has made a 30 billion pounds sterling hostile takeover bid for Societe Generale and Paribas, which agreed to merge in Feb 1999. BNP launched the takeover bid without consulting the French government, which may become involved. BNP Director-General Michel Pebereau has stated that the three-way merger would not involve any closure of high street banks or any enforced redundancies. He aims to create a French bank of international scale.
