Dozens die in collapse of Italian apartments

Article Abstract:

It has been confirmed that at least 16 people died as the result of the collapse of a six-storey apartment block in Foggia, Italy. It is believed that more than 75 people were in the building when it collapsed, and the death toll is likely to rise. The building was constructed in the late 1960s, when there was strong demand for reasonable housing and poor materials where therefore used on unsuitable sites. The local seismic laboratory has stated that the ground beneath the block gave way.
