The rewards from pooling different investors' risks

Article Abstract:

Many financial advisers in the UK are now beginning to promote the use of a personal equity plan to invest in a split-capital investment trust. Under this system, investors buy shares in the trust, which is then invested professionally. Supervision is undertaken by an independent board of directors. Split capital trusts always have at least two classes of share, in contrast with ordinary investment trusts. This brings advantages for investors who are seeking income, those who are seeking growth and those who want security for their capital.

Guaranteed not to blow your capital?

Article Abstract:

Many investors in the UK are being attracted to financial products which are 'guaranteed' not to decline in value. There is particular interest in 'controlled risk' funds which guarantee that the investor's capital falls by no more than a pre-determined amount of the stock market declines dramatically. However, it is worth being cautious about such products. These are promoted as offering a degree of safety, but can in fact sometimes be more risky than an ordinary investment in shares.

Halifax raises stakes in savings war with the telephone banks

Article Abstract:

Halifax, formerly the largest building society in the UK, is to compete directly with telephone banking services by offering interest of up to 7.85% on sums of 40,000 pounds sterling or more. Investments of over 10,000 pounds sterling will attract interest of 7.3% before tax. Retail banking has become less profitable, and banks and building societies are now looking to take on telephone banks, which have gained a large share of the UK's 500 billion pounds sterling savings market.
