The rich and poor students of Europe

Article Abstract:

British considerations of student grants are based on US practice and EC examples have not been studied. Loan-only systems are not operated in any EC country. Belgium, Ireland, Italy and Greece have grant-only systems. Means-testing is used in Holland, Luxembourg and France. Top-up loans are increasingly available. Students in Spain and Portugal tend to choose the university nearest home as grants do not cover maintenance. Grants in all EC countries except the UK include vacations.

Branch manager? Don't bank on it

Article Abstract:

The UK banking industry now only recruits around 5,000 people a year, compared with more than 30,000 during the days when there was no automation or computerisation. Large-scale graduate recruitment schemes are being replaced with smaller training schemes which are much more selective. Graduate recruitment is now focusing on specialised areas such as head office functions, rather than on general branch management.

Helping students who are tutors, too

Article Abstract:

Many postgraduate students in the UK are involved in teaching to a certain extent, but some receive no assistance in developing teaching skills. Some universities are now taking steps to formalise teaching by postgraduates, seeing this as a vital way of improving teaching standards. These include Lancaster university, which has a centralised tutoring course run by the staff development office.
