The sweet smell of success

Article Abstract:

Bernard Rose and Clive Barker are British but working in America where they made the horror film 'Candyman.' It is set in Chicago and has an all-American cast. Novelist Clive Barker's short story 'The Forbidden,' which was set in Liverpool, England, was adapted for the screen with a racial theme. Black audiences like the film, as the spook, Candyman, is played by black actor Tony Todd. Most urban myths are in the film, showing that oral storytelling still exists.

Ooh, Pedro, you are awful

Article Abstract:

Spanish film director Pedro Amoldovar has attracted considerable attention for his comedy-dramas and dramatic comedies. They have been in questionable taste, but do not go as far as being dark farces. His sexual politics have led to him losing support in the US, where he as in great favour in the mid-1980s. However, it is worth looking carefully at his works, which show a mixture of comedy and genuine feeling and a great love for all the trickery of the cinema.

Are critics fair game for artists?

Article Abstract:

Some artists are extremely dismissive of critics, stating that critics are simply failed artists themselves and are therefore not in the best position to make reasoned judgments. It is true that some of the best critics have never actually practised the art about which they comment, or only did so a few times, unsuccessfully. However, most critics have actually been among the best practitioners of the art concerned.
