What has happened to turn Mr Blair into a eurosceptic?

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair's views on European Monetary Union membership are discussed. The suggestion from Ed Balls, the Treasury's chief economic adviser, that the UK will not join the euro zone in the foreseeable future, makes Blair seem marginalized.

The trouble with Europe is that you have to swallow it whole

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been forced to move much more rapidly towards integration with the European Union than he would ideally have liked. He is clearly ill at ease with the current state of policy regarding the UK's links with the European Union. In particular, he has come under pressure from German Finance Minister Oskar Lafontaine, who is seeking to force him to abandon his non-committal stance. It is clear that Blair can no longer defend the claim that European monetary union is an entirely economic project and that the UK can judge whether to join simply on balance-sheet terms.
