When it comes to Europe, there is still a lot to play for

Article Abstract:

The continued debate surrounding possible UK membership of European monetary union is discussed. It is argued that it is by no means certain that Prime Minister Tony Blair can convince ordinary people of the UK's destiny in Europe.

Tony Blair has a good story on Europe: he should stick to it

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has become more open about his Europeanism than he was in the run-up to the general election in 1997. This is reflected in the fact that he has approved the use of the manifesto of the pan-EU Party of European Socialists. He is also using more relaxed language about the UK's relations with the European Union. However, it remains uncertain how Blair will handle relations with the European Union as the next general election approaches. In particular, it will be very difficult for him to delay a decision on whether to recommend European monetary union entry to the electorate.

It is time for Mr Blair to spell out the benefits of Europe

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair should remind voters why the government supports European monetary union in principle. He must now begin conditioning public opinion so that his options really are open in the next parliament. He cannot, and should not, have to argue alone for European monetary union. He may gain some support from Robin Cook, who was once one of the Labour party's strongest Eurosceptics, but may not be able to rely on support from any other leading politician.
