The truth about home births

Article Abstract:

The UK government now offers pregnant women the choice of whether to give birth in hospital or at home, but many obstetricians believe that home births are potentially very dangerous. This is particularly the case for first-time mothers, especially if they experience a lengthy labour. Anyone planning a home birth must take into account the availability and quality of the emergency back-up service, and a key element in the decision about whether to give birth at home must be how close the pregnant mother lives to a unit providing emergency services. Research suggests that home births are safe for healthy women with a low risk of complications.

Teach science as if it were history

Article Abstract:

A serious shortage of physics and chemistry teachers is emerging in the UK. The vast majority of physics and chemistry graduates are not attracted to teaching, partly because it has a poor image and partly because they can quite easily find less stressful employment in other areas. Some observers believe that it is now time to consider offering financial incentives to attract mature students out of industry into science teaching. Consideration should also be given to encouraging more transfers from subjects where there is not a shortage of teachers.

The vision things

Article Abstract:

It can be very difficult to choose new spectacle frames, especially for people who a require a particular type of lens, such as a varifocal. Factors such as skin colouring and face shape must be taken into account, and it is therefore wise to take advice from others. It is important to have an eye test every two years, allowing the optometrist to check eye muscles, the outer and inner eye and sight. Extra tests may be required by people with certain conditions, such as diabetes.
