Mission improbable

Article Abstract:

Briton Peter Bleach, who was arrested in Dec 1995 with five Latvians after dropping containers of weapons by parachute over West Bengal, India, has now been found not guilty of waging war on India. He would have faced the death sentence if he had been found guilty. All six men have been convicted of the less serious crime of conspiring to wage war on India, for which they could still receive life sentences. Bleach was aware that the weapons were being supplied illegally, and claims that he believed he was helping the authorities in the UK gain useful information about arms smuggling.

The widow who would be queen

Article Abstract:

Educated Indians express support in public for Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi, but in private have reservations about the possibility of her leading the country. She is Italian, and is still widely seen as a foreigner, even though she has lived in India for 30 years and speaks Hindi. She initially resisted pressure placed upon her by top figures in the Congress Party to enter politics after the assassination of her husband, Rajiv Gandhi, in 1991, but changed her mind quite suddenly in 1997. She has already had a significant impact on Indian politics.

My feudal lords

Article Abstract:

Pakistani journalist Najam Sethi has shown great courage in continuing to publish his weekly The Friday Times as the government becomes increasingly dictatorial. He has been closely scrutinized by the government, and has also come under very strong pressure as a result of his involvement with Tehmina Durrani, whose book 'My Feudal Lord' he published in 1994. Durrani now claims that Sethi cheated her, and is suing him for damages. In turn, he is suing her for defamation.
