Accidental death of an anarchist comes back to scandalise Italy

Article Abstract:

The Italian High Court has sentenced Adriano Sofri, Giorgio Pietrostefani and Ovidio Bompressi, all former members of the Lotta Continua left-wing agitprop group, to 22 years in prison each for the murder in May 1972 of police commissioner Luigi Calabresi. However, the vast majority of Italians do not feel that these men are guilty, and there is a widespread belief that the past should simply be forgotten. The case has been exploited by political parties of all sides for political advantage.

The woman on the right was a British nanny. She faced 25 years in an American jail. And we went wild with indignation. The woman on the left is a British childminder. She faces 25 years in an American jail. And we couldn't give a damn

Article Abstract:

The case of Manjit Basuta, a British woman who has been on trial in San Diego, CA, on charges of causing the sudden death of a 13-month-old boy who attended the day care service she operated from her home, has attracted very little attention in the UK. This contrasts sharply with the case of Louise Woodward, the British nanny who also stood trial in the US after one of the children in her care died. Basuta's supporters feel that she is not receiving the same attention as Woodward because she is a Sikh and because she is much older than Woodward and has lived in the US for 10 years.
