The year the Universe expanded

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of significant scientific discoveries in 1998. Research by two teams from the UK and the US has led to the genetic blueprint being published of the first multicellular animal, while experiments undertaken by a number of independent groups of scientists have given an insight into the clockwork mechanisms controlling the daily biorhythms of life. Astronomers have also established that supernovae are further away than expected, thus suggesting that the Universe in general is expanding more rapidly than it should be as a result of the Big Bang explosion.

Pusztai: the verdict

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken by scientist Arpad Pusztai at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, indicating that genetically modified (GM) potatoes are harmful to rats has been supported by 20 other scientists. However, some observers believe that Pusztai's work does not meet the standards required for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. An audit investigation of Pusztai's work indicates that he became confused over whether he was dealing with GM potatoes expressing the lectin GNA or ordinary potatoes which had Con A, a more toxic lectin, added to them.
